The last month of the year is all about holidays and celebrations,  but also holidays, gifts and fun. The cinema is one of the favorite entertainment options for young and old. So, to enjoy December at home with a cup of hot chocolate and cupcakes, here are 10 Christmas related children’s movies.

The Grinch (2018)

The third adaptation of the tale written by Dr. Seuss has arrived in 3D digital animation format. We therefore find ourselves facing a film  much less obscure than the previous version interpreted by Jim Carrey,  which makes it more accessible to the little ones.

Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

The protagonist here is Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King, a central figure in the celebration of Halloween. Animated through the technique of  stop motion this animated film with a Gothic aesthetic, according to the style of its creator, Tim Burton, can impress the youngest children.

Rudolph the Little Red Nosed Reindeer (1998)

Among the children’s films related to Christmas, this animated film has the AA rating; it is therefore specially adapted to the little ones. It tells the story of a reindeer which, thanks to its red and shiny nose, is unique. Rudolph, however, suffered mockery from his classmates. After running away, he returns to become the hero who saves Christmas.

Mom I missed the plane ! (1990), one of the best children’s films related to Christmas

A sort of modern Christmas classic, in which we find a hairless Macaulay Culkin alongside veterans Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern and Catherine O’Hara. This film was so successful that four others followed it! It tells the story of a child who, on Christmas Eve, must defend his house from thieves.

The Express Pole  (2004)

Directed by Robert Zemeckis ( Back to the Future, Forrest Gump ), this animated film follows the motion capture animation technique. It chronicles the adventures of an eight year old child who is not sure whether he believes in Santa Claus.

The little one’s faith returns, however, after a train journey (driven by Tom Hanks) to the North Pole. A real adventure, on the evening of December 24.

Scrooge’s Funny Christmas (2009), a classic amongchildren’s films related to Christmas

A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens,  is one such story that reflects the spirit of Christmas. This animated film was also filmed using motion capture technique and directed by Robert Zemeckis. Jim Carrey was commissioned to represent the famous Ebenezer Scrooge.

Christmas with the Muppets  (1992)

Another adaptation of the Dickensian classic, but with the  Muppets. Unlike the Zemeckis version, this film was specially produced for the little ones.

Elf  (2003)

Before Jon Favreau created the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Iron Man , he made this original Christmas comedy, full of magic and fun.

This film tells the story of a human who, by accident, turns into one of Santa’s elves. When he discovers his origins, he decides to go on an adventure to try to find his real parents.

Mission: Christmas  (2011)

Although it was cataloged as a failure when it was released in theaters, this film has made a place for itself among the children’s feature films related to Christmas.

In this story,  the North Pole has modernized to such an extent that it operates in the style of Amazon. Santa Claus, seeing that things are under control, decides to retire. But, the following year, a child does not receive gifts …

Batman: The Challenge  (1992)

A superhero film, released long before this cinematic sub-genre became the king of made in Hollywood cinema. Tim Burton exploits here the same dark and Gothic aesthetic as in The Nightmare Before Christmas. Batman must face the attack of the Penguin in the middle of Christmas time. This film is recommended for children from 12 years old.

Other children’s films related to Christmas

The options do not end with these 10 titles. For the little ones, we recommend  Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown! Slightly older children, between 10 and 12 years old, can choose  The Toy Race  (with Arnold Schwarzenegger).

Finally, for kids who are on vacation and are approaching their teenage years, we also recommend  The Gremlins, Edward Scissorhands  (another Tim Burton movie) or  Bad Santa.
