How To React If Our Baby Chokes On Milk? – Being Parents

How to react if our baby is choking on milk?

The first time we are mothers, everything becomes a world for us. The tears of our son alarm us and the slightest fever makes us think of the worst. One of the things we fear the most is  not knowing what to do if our baby is choking on milk. We explain the causes and solutions to this problem.

As mothers, our responsibility is endless. We do our best (and we know it), and in the event that we’re a  first-time mom, the feelings get louder. When an unforeseen event arises that could be dangerous, we must act with coldness and firmness.

If we get hysterical, there isn’t much we can do. It is certain that at specific times it is virtually impossible to remain calm. But we must try,  for our sake and that of our child.

Fear can put an end to any attempt to help a choking baby. You must prepare yourself mentally and be aware that you are their protector.

What should I do if my baby is choking on milk ?

Quickly place the baby  on his stomach. Pat his back with the palm of his hand,  as this will make him cough. It is very common for such a small child to choke on fluid, especially if it is not swallowed in the correct position.

If, on the contrary, he choked on something solid, you must perform the  Heimlich Maneuver. If you still cannot resolve the situation,  call 911 as soon as possible. It is very important to have all possible help numbers in a safe place, in case something happens.

It is better to be too far-sighted than irresponsible. Don’t feel guilty if your baby sometimes chokes on milk –  it can happen to any adult. How many times have we choked on a glass of water!

Why is my baby choking on milk?

If the baby is choking on milk, it could be due to many factors. Some have to do with us and some have to do with his brand new body. Either way,  it is recommended that you talk to your pediatrician if this happens too often. He, more than anyone, can advise us on what to do.

When the problem is external

The milk may flow too hard, and when the baby sucks, it goes straight to the throat. This can be solved by adjusting the outlet of the milk duct or  by extracting a little milk just before breastfeeding.

If the baby is already drinking from a bottle, the liquid may come out too quickly for him. At first, many children fail to handle it properly. However, it  ends up being resolved with patience and with the necessary time.

The baby should drink the milk in an upright position to avoid any kind of choking

When the problem is internal

Some babies may have internal problems with swallowing or gastroesophageal reflux disease  (the backflow of stomach contents into the mouth). To find out if this is the case and not related to milk or breastfeeding, it is advisable to consult a specialist.

If you want to keep your baby from choking, try placing him in the prone position. Try not to put it in a horizontal position after the shot,  but rather vertically. If he suffers from reflux and suffocates, he may cough or vomit without risk of suffocation.

Likewise, don’t let him bottle- feed him alone  . You have to wait until he is a little older and be sure that he will not choke again. Try to keep the crib in your bedroom, at least for the first 6-7 months. This will allow you to better control it.

Choking at this stage is quite common. Talk to any woman who’s ever been a mother. This is a more normal situation than you might think! Babies are very vulnerable people, and they need help learning to move in the world.

You shouldn’t feel  overwhelmed  by this step. In a very short time, your child will be able to eat and drink on their own, and you will stop worrying about something bad happening to them. Until then,  try to be attentive and follow these tips so that you no longer have unnecessary fear!
