Understanding crying and the reasons why a child may cry

Empathy is the basis for understanding crying

Parents need to be empathetic so they can understand their children’s crying, no matter how old they are. The empathy  should always be used in the education of children, in addition, it should be a usual form of communication so that children feel supported and understood at any time. Let them know that their emotions matter, whatever they are.

When it comes to babies, parents think empathy isn’t necessary, but it is more. Some parents do not understand that a  baby  can cry when left alone in his cradle when he seems quiet in the arms. Obviously, he felt safe and emotionally protected, and when you put him in a crib, he might feel abandoned because he won’t know where he is. What if you were gone forever?

Your baby is better near you

When you’re not around, your baby doesn’t know you are coming back. He thinks he is alone in the world, who will take care of his needs if you are not there? If you disappear from his  sight  and he doesn’t feel you near him, it is as if you have changed planet. Imagine the feeling that a person very important to you ceases to exist? This is how your baby feels when you are no longer by his side (even if you are in the next room).

Parents need to empathize to understand their children's crying

If your baby is having fun with a  toy  or other stimuli, he or she may momentarily forget that you are gone, but as soon as he or she becomes aware of the feeling of loneliness and anguish it causes, he or she start crying. This is the main reason why all babies cry when their moms or caregivers are away.

Being a mother is not measured by what you leave behind when you have a baby, but by everything you gain from it.

-Anonymous quote-

Your children need your closeness to rest, even at night. If you want to sleep peacefully, it is better to have your baby near you, next to your bed or in a bassinet attached to your bed … Because if you put him away from you, your baby will not sleep well, but you will still sleep less good. He needs your scent, to feel you close, to see you, to know that you are there… He needs you to calm this anguish of loneliness which torments him when you are not near him.

If he sees you he will feel better

If you have a night light with which your baby can see you by his side while opening his eyes, he will be much more relaxed and he will be able to fall asleep more easily. He may even go back to sleep on his own without needing you to physically calm him down, as just seeing you and knowing that you are around him is more than enough to make him feel safe and comfortable emotionally.

He needs to feel your breathing, the smell of your body,  he needs to feel you close and if it’s skin to skin it’s even better. If you put him in a crib that is too far away from your bed, it can be difficult for him because he won’t feel you, he will feel insecure and may start to cry. Even if you are a few inches away, your baby feels like you are in another country… he needs to feel you to calm down.

Before calming a crying child or baby, it is important to understand crying and what happens to it.

You will notice how quickly he calms down when you put him in bed with you or if you place him on top of you. He will calm down almost instantly as he will feel you without problems, he will listen to your heartbeat and your presence will help him regain emotional well-being. If you don’t have him in your bed but he’s in a crib by your side and you touch his little hand, that’s enough for him to feel you and know you’re near him. All the time.

You know that you will come back later if you leave the room, you know that you will not give up your baby for the world. But all this your little one ignores. He believes that if you leave you will disappear, if he stops feeling you near him he will think that you no longer exist. It’s easy to understand your baby’s crying and avoid all of that emotional pain by staying by her side for as long as needed. It’s a moment that goes by quickly, and that is worth it.
